Wallper reads the cover of whatever is playing in Apple Music or Spotify and builds your wallpaper out of its colors. Slow, drifting, never the same twice, and it changes the moment the next track starts.
Quick answer: Play music, and your wallpaper takes on the colors of the album cover. It follows every track change, works on the desktop, and on macOS 26 and later it follows you to the lock screen too.
It Looks Like the Album, Not a Blur
The easy version of this feature averages the cover into one muddy color. Wallper picks out the few colors that actually make the artwork recognisable and keeps them roughly where they sit in the image.
So a dark album with one bright accent gives you a dark wallpaper with one bright accent. You can usually tell what is playing by glancing at your desktop.
On the Lock Screen As Well
On macOS 26 and later the same wallpaper is waiting on your lock screen, and it changes with the music like the desktop does.
The two are separate switches in Settings, so you can have a desktop that reacts and a lock screen that stays put, or the other way around. If you have not set up the lock screen side yet, the lock screen guide walks you through it.
Play, pause and skip moved in next to the wallpaper, in the dock controls and the menu bar, with the track title and artist beside them. You can change songs without going back to the music app.
It Will Not Cost You Your Battery
A wallpaper that dances to your music sounds like something that flattens a laptop by lunchtime. This one was built the other way round.
Covers you have already seen are remembered instead of fetched again. Pausing and starting the same track again costs nothing. And if you are on an older Mac, there is a switch in Playback settings that makes the whole effect lighter.
