Wallper 1.0.5: Likes in the Grid, and Why They Matter

A wallpaper library has a discovery problem that a music library does not.

You cannot skim video. A grid of thumbnails tells you almost nothing about how footage moves, and motion is the entire point. So people preview a few, pick one, and never see the several thousand wallpapers sitting behind the ones that happened to load first.

Likes are the first attempt at fixing that, and 1.0.5 makes them work properly.

Liking Without Leaving the Grid

You can now like and unlike wallpapers directly in the grid, with instant visual feedback. No page reload, no waiting for a response, no wondering whether it registered.

That immediacy is the whole feature. A like that takes half a second to confirm is a like most people will not bother giving, and a rating system nobody uses produces no signal at all. It has to be effortless or it does not happen.

What Likes Are For

Two things.

The obvious one is personal: a way to keep track of wallpapers you liked without applying them immediately, since the thing you want on your desktop in January is rarely the thing you wanted in July.

The more useful one is collective. Likes are how good work gets surfaced. Wallper's library is largely built by people who upload wallpapers they made, and without any signal about quality, the gallery becomes a wall sorted by upload date, where a beautifully made loop from three months ago is buried under whatever went up this morning.

Keeping Your Place

One browsing fix worth mentioning: switching pages now scrolls back to the top automatically.

Previously, moving to the next page left you at whatever scroll position you had reached, looking at the middle of a fresh grid with no idea where its beginning was. A small thing that made browsing feel disorienting for no reason.
