Wallpaper App Slow to Load on Mac

A ten to twenty second wait struck through in red, replaced by the word Instant
Mar 25, 2026·3 min read

Wallper used to sit empty for ten or twenty seconds after you opened it on some Macs. This release fixes that, so your wallpapers are there when the window is.

You open an app to use it, not to watch it get ready.

On some Macs, Wallper would open and then show you nothing for ten or twenty seconds. The window was there, the wallpapers were not. This release fixes it, including when the window opens behind whatever else you are doing.

Quick answer: If Wallper used to sit empty for ten or twenty seconds after opening, updating fixes it. If your library is still slow on a current version, that is something else, and the slow loading FAQ covers it.

The Home Screen Is Full on the First Look

The Home screen had a related habit. Recommended For You and Recently Created could come up empty, and only fill in once you had gone to another tab and come back.

They are there the first time now. Which matters, because the first look is exactly when suggestions are supposed to be doing their job.

Your Mac Has a Name Again

If you have a licence covering more than one Mac, the app lists which machines are using it. Some newer Macs were showing up as Unknown Device rather than as a Mac Studio, a Mac mini, an iMac or a MacBook.

They are all named properly now. It sounds cosmetic, and it is, right up until you want to free up a seat and cannot tell which entry is the Mac you sold. How seats work across machines is in the licence FAQ.

Also Calmer at Startup

Opening the app no longer sets your wallpaper again for no reason, and wallpapers change over more reliably when they do. Nothing you would notice on purpose, which is rather the point.

If It Is Still Slow for You

Ten to twenty seconds of nothing was this specific bug, and it is fixed. A library that is merely slower than you would like on a current version is usually one of two ordinary things.

The first time you open Wallper after an update it has a little more to do, so give it one restart before judging it. And if your connection is poor, the wallpapers themselves are already there while their preview images are still arriving, so it can look emptier than it is for a moment.

Neither of those needs fixing. Anything beyond them is covered in the slow loading FAQ, and your library shows up from what is already on your Mac, so being offline entirely is not a reason for an empty window.

How to Check Which Version You Have

Click the Wallper icon in your menu bar and the version is right there. On newer releases the app watches for updates itself and puts an orange dot on that icon when one is waiting, so you will usually know before you go looking. On this one you still had to check.

FAQ

Why did Wallper take so long to show my wallpapers?

A bug on some Macs left the library empty for ten to twenty seconds after opening. Since this release the wallpapers are there when the window is, including when it opens in the background.

Why does my Mac show as Unknown Device?

Older versions failed to recognise some newer Macs. They are all named properly now, so you can tell which of your machines is using which seat of your licence.

Why was the Home screen empty when I first opened it?

Recommended For You and Recently Created could come up blank until you switched tabs and came back. They load on the first look now.

Does Wallper need the internet to show my library?

Not for what you already have. Your library appears straight away and fills in when you are back online, so opening the app offline still shows your wallpapers.
