Different Wallpapers for Light and Dark Mode on Mac

Set a different wallpaper for Light and Dark mode on Mac: what macOS does by itself, and how to auto switch your own live wallpapers when Dark Mode turns on.
Dark Mode changes every window on your Mac, but a wallpaper you picked yourself stays exactly as it was. At night you get a dark Finder floating over a sunny beach. What you want is a different wallpaper for Light and Dark mode, something bright for the day and something darker for the evening, switching on its own.
Quick answer: macOS does this only with Apple's own wallpapers, set to Automatic in System Settings › Wallpaper. To use your own, including live ones, create a Light & Dark playlist in Wallper, give it one wallpaper for Light and one for Dark, and press Play. It switches the moment your Mac does.
Does your Mac wallpaper change with Dark Mode?
Only if it's one of Apple's. In System Settings › Wallpaper, many of Apple's wallpapers have an automatic mode that switches between a light and a dark version with your appearance. Choose one of them, set the menu next to its name to Automatic, and it follows Light and Dark from then on. The same menu has light and dark still versions if you'd rather it stayed one way.
A photo you added yourself looks the same in both modes. There's no setting that says "use this photo in Light mode and that one in Dark", so with macOS alone you're choosing from Apple's set.
When Auto switches to Dark Mode
The appearance itself is set in System Settings › Appearance, where you choose Light, Dark or Auto. Light and Dark stay as they are. Auto switches from light to dark on the Night Shift schedule you've set, and it waits until your Mac has been idle for at least a minute, so the screen doesn't change while you're in the middle of typing.
To move that schedule, open System Settings › Displays, click Night Shift and choose Sunset to Sunrise, which needs Location Services, or Custom times of your own. For a quick switch by hand, click Control Center in the menu bar, click the arrow next to Display, then click Dark Mode.
Anything that follows the appearance inherits that timing. If Auto holds off until 9:12 pm because you were still typing, the wallpaper changes at 9:12 too.
How to switch your own wallpaper with Dark Mode
Wallper's Light & Dark playlist holds one wallpaper for Light appearance and one for Dark. When macOS switches, so does the wallpaper, with the soft fade Wallper uses everywhere: the new wallpaper starts underneath and fades in over the old one, with no black frame in between.
It follows whatever drives your appearance: a switch by hand in System Settings or Control Center, the Auto setting that turns dark in the evening, or a shortcut you run yourself. Any wallpaper in your Wallper library can be the Light or the Dark one, including videos you've imported.

How to set up a Light & Dark playlist
-
Download Wallper and open it. It runs on macOS 14.6 or later.
-
Open the Playlists tab and create a playlist. Choose Light & Dark.
-
Select Light on the playlist page and click a wallpaper in the library below it.
-
Select Dark and pick its partner.
-
Press Play.
To have the switch happen on its own, open System Settings › Appearance and choose Auto. macOS then goes dark in the evening and light in the morning, and the playlist changes the wallpaper at the same moment. Wallper's menu bar panel shows which playlist is running.
You don't have to wait for the evening to test it. Switch to Dark by hand and the wallpaper fades over to its partner; switch back to Light and the first one returns.
How to choose a good light and dark pair
The pairs that work best share a subject and change the light: the same street by day and at night, the same coast at noon and at dusk. The switch then looks like evening arriving in one place. The pair in these photos is a pond in sunshine with a frog for Light, and the same kind of pond after dark with a black cat for Dark.
Before you settle on a pair, check a few things:
-
Keep the dark wallpaper genuinely dark near the top and bottom of the screen. That's where the menu bar and the Dock sit, and in Dark mode their text is light.
-
Look at the brightest spot in the dark one. A lit window or a moon is fine, but a bright sky across half the screen works against Dark mode at night.
-
Match the pace. If one is a slow, quiet loop and the other is busy, the switch feels abrupt.
-
Try each one behind the windows you normally keep open. A scene that looks great on an empty desktop can feel busy in the gaps between your apps.
There are thousands of candidates in the Wallper gallery, where you can filter by category and resolution, and the free live wallpapers list is a good place to start.

Light & Dark or Day & Night?
Wallper has two kinds of playlist that can put a darker wallpaper on screen in the evening, and they react to different things.
| Light & Dark | Day & Night | |
|---|---|---|
| Switches when | Your Mac changes appearance | At sunrise and sunset, or at times you pick |
| Follows Dark Mode turned on by hand | Yes | No |
| With Dark mode on all day | Shows the Dark wallpaper all day | Still changes with the clock |
| Suits you if | You switch appearance by hand or use Auto | You want the wallpaper tied to the time of day |
If your appearance is set to Auto, the two often agree, but they're separate on purpose: some people keep Dark mode on all day and still want a daytime wallpaper.
They also keep slightly different time. Light & Dark changes when the appearance does, and under Auto that can be a little after the scheduled moment, once you pause. Day & Night goes by the clock, at the times you set or at sunrise and sunset as Wallper works them out from your time zone, so it's the steadier choice if you want the desktop to go dark at a predictable moment. For clock-based schedules, see how to make your Mac wallpaper change with the time of day.
Only one thing drives the desktop at a time: a playlist, Media Sync (the music wallpapers that follow whatever you play), or a wallpaper you set by hand. The last one you chose wins and the others switch themselves off. So you run one of these playlists at a time, and turning on Media Sync or setting a wallpaper by hand stops Light & Dark until you start it again.
Why didn't my wallpaper switch with Dark Mode?
-
Check the appearance. If System Settings › Appearance is set to Light or Dark, nothing changes on its own, so choose Auto.
-
Stop typing for a minute. Auto holds the switch until the Mac is idle, so it can come a little later than you expect.
-
Check what's in charge. Wallper's menu bar panel names the playlist that's running. If it names something else, another source took over the desktop; click that line to see your other sources and switch back.
-
For Apple's wallpapers, the menu next to the wallpaper's name in System Settings › Wallpaper has to say Automatic. A still version stays light or dark whatever the appearance.
